2017 passed me by. It has ended before I managed to fully take stock of my life and happenings around me. It went through like a whirlwind, leaving me stun and hanging… The past year maybe a whirl but it leave its footprints. And what footprints they were. Marawi crisis, martial law in Mindanao, militarization, IP killings and systematic attacks on our democratic rights not to mention natural disasters. On the   personal level, I made more connection with my family, contributed to a collaborative book, distance myself from the noise of the "outside world" and spend more time grounding and immersing myself in communities of struggles. While I was struggling to make sense of my life, the world has not stopped to help me figure it out. It clawed at me, waking me up from my stupor. More than two months into the Marawi crisis, government troops are still employing daily airstrikes to flush out the local terrorists. The 60-day Martial law declaration which was declared by President Duterte on the same day the siege started have been extended to five months, that is, until the end of December this year. The initial declaration was upheld by the Supreme Court with a vote of 11-3-1. Eleven fully supported the declaration, three limiting it to Marawi only, and one lone dissenter, Associate Justice Marvic Leonen nullyfing the declaration as without legal grounds. The Supreme Court's decision have buttressed the Chiefs of Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police's proposal to recommend the extension of Martial Law until Marawi City is rebuilt. This morning I was walking along Kalayaan Avenue, engrossed with thoughts of how to give flesh to a project paper due the next day. I have had trouble concentrating with so many disappointing events in and outside the country amidst other concerns. Yet, something caught my eyes cutting through the morass of my musings. I passed through this area so many time and never noticed the green vegetation hanging on the wall. Or, maybe I noticed the potted plants. But, what I didn't noticed were the other plants seemingly similar to the others, yet different. With my myopic eyes I peered closer. What I saw made me smile. There are vegetables planted in containers popularly known as container urban gardening. The space is quiet narrow, yet, whoever planted these vegetables maximimized the small space and made use of urban container gardening technology.
