"…Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven…? Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven…? "
This is a father’s lament addressed to his young son who passed away at a young age, when his life was only starting. The melancholia of the song and the longing struck a deep chord in me. Having lost a father to a killer, who ended his young life, had forever deprived me and my brothers to know the man who sired us. I was often told that he loves us so much. He was eagerly waiting for me to come into this world, a daughter whom he longed to hold in his arms. But, our togetherness was short-lived. He was forcibly taken away from us even before we could get to know him. To grow up showered with his love and encouragement. We’re also forever deprived to reciprocate that love and show our appreciation.
Hearing Eric Clapton’s soulful song, I wonder if Tatay would know me when the time comes. I wonder if he would hold my hand…But these musings are only fleeting. I know in my heart, he kept his love for us. Even if what we have is only a faded picture of him, I know he will be there waiting with his open arms. To Tatay, we love you...
